Sticks of Vilnius

My second home city Vilnius started to grow very fast after Lithuania became independent in 1991 and started to let in western culture. A sign of fast growth in small countries is growing buildings. The right side of the Neris river became a 'boom' of glass skyscrapers.

The first skyscraper is the circled plan tower 'Europe', built in 2004 to symbolise becoming a member of the European Union, the Council of Europe.

Skyscrapers create an unfriendly scale of the natural environment in the city but create a massive symbol of power. What do skyscrapers have in common? The 'vertical typology'. This series appeared after watching light connection with glass buildings. The idea was to collect skyscrapers (sticks) of Vilnius into one series.
